This homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning recipe is SO EASY to make and way cheaper than store-bought.

Sprinkle this crunchy, garlicky, and savory seasoning blend all over your favorite foods. It goes with just about everything!

When I first fell in love with everything bagel seasoning, I was sprinkling it on everything from avocado toast to cucumber salad.

The flavor is incredible, and it adds a garlicky crunch and savory boost to just about everything you can imagine.

The only problem was that it started to get expensive! So I knew that I needed to create my own copycat version.

Well, not only is this homemade version budget-friendly, but it also tastes so much fresher than store-bought. You're going to love it!

    Reasons to Make Your Own

    • Cheaper. A little jar in my area costs upwards of $8! It's almost always cheaper per serving to buy the spices in bulk and make your own.
    • Fresher. Since your homemade version is made in small batches, you can control the quality and freshness.
    • Easier to find. Depending on where you live, you might not be able to actually find "everything but the bagel" seasoning. If that's the case, making your own is definitely the best option!

    Ingredients:

Small bowls of seasonings needed to make everything bagel seasoning, including poppy seeds, dried minced garlic, etc.
    • Sesame seeds (both black and white sesame seeds are recommended)
    • Poppy seeds
    • Dried minced onion
    • Dried minced garlic (or garlic flakes)
    • Flaky sea salt (we recommend Maldon – it's perfect for this recipe)

    How to Make Everything Seasoning:

A small bowl with a variety of seasonings laid out in a circular fashion.
    • Step one: Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl.
A small bowl of seeds and seasonings being mixed together with a small whisk.
    • Step two: Gently stir or whisk all of the seeds and seasonings together until well combined.

    Storing Homemade Everything Seasoning

Transfer the everything bagel seasoning to a glass jar with a lid or an airtight container. Store it at room temperature for up to 6 months.

If you live in a humid area, you may notice some clumping due to moisture in the air. You can break the seasoning up with a small fork, or make smaller batches more frequently.

Ways to Use Everything Bagel Seasoning

You can use this homemade seasoning mix just the same as you would your favorite store-bought everything bagel seasoning. Here are a few ideas:

    • Sprinkled on avocado toast
    • With eggs (scrambled, fried, boiled, etc.)
    • Sprinkled on top of celery stuffed with cream cheese (or mini peppers)
    • To make homemade everything bagels
    • Sprinkled on breadsticks or soft pretzels before baking
    • On roasted vegetables
    • Sprinkled on salad (like our cucumber and bell pepper salad)

    Expert Tips

    • Buy in bulk. The best cost savings are had when you buy the individual ingredients in bulk. We love Costco for this, but also buy some stuff (like black sesame seeds) from Amazon. These ingredients can be used for your regular cooking needs, plus you'll have enough to make all your own seasoning blends (like this one).
    • Be mindful of clumping. If you live in an area with a lot of humidity, your seasoning may clump during storage. Try breaking it up with a knife, or sprinkle in a bit of rice starch to help with moisture when you first make it.
    • Flaky salt is king. We love to use a flaky salt (like Maldon sea salt), as the visible flakes really give that authentic everything bagel experience!

    Notes

    Yields: 6 ½ tablespoons
Salt: Good-quality flaky or coarse salt is an integral part of the classic everything bagel seasoning, and so I recommend it for this copycat version. We like Maldon best, but kosher salt flakes work well and are a budget-friendly alternative.
Larger or smaller batches: This recipe can be scaled down (or up) to make the desired amount. I like to keep a single batch on hand and make more as needed, as a high humidity environment can cause the blend to clump.
    • Single serving: 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, ½ teaspoon black sesame seeds, ½ teaspoon poppy seeds, ½ teaspoon dried minced onion, ½ teaspoon dried minced garlic, and ¼ teaspoon flaky or coarse salt.
If it does clump: Break it up with a fork. If you know you get clumping, sprinkle in a bit of rice starch when you first make it.

SO much better than the store-bought versions because it's so fresh, and definitely way better quality salt than whatever is used in the ones you find at Trader Joe's, Costco, etc. It's good on literally "everything."

You're so right!! This spice goes on everything and tastes delicious and seems to glorify the flavor on everything I've used it on, which is nearly "every thing", fish, beef, poultry, lamb chops, vegetables, Grits, to make flavored rice. I'm not sure if I used it on pork shops yet. IM jar is nearly empty and I'm looking forward to making my own. Thanks+++++++ so much for sharing!!!
